Why a code word and a callback?
Today a phone call can sound exactly like someone you love — voice-cloning
tools can copy a voice from a short recording. Panic makes people act fast,
and fast is what a scam needs.
A code word can't be copied from a voicemail. And hanging up to call back on
the number you already know breaks the script: a real family member will still
be there in two minutes; a scam usually won't.
This is not about being suspicious of everyone. It's about giving
your family one calm, agreed step so a frightening call becomes a routine one.
